September 23 – Pink

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

September 23rd’s “HOT or NOT?” candidate was Pink. You voted. Pink is:

pink

Alecia Beth Moore (who performs under the stage name Pink), was born on September 8, 1979. To date she has sold over 31 million albums worldwide. Her songs are characterized by their personally rebellious tone and a statement-like strict use of the first person.

She released her first single “There You Go” and first album, the R&B-oriented Can’t Take Me Home, in 2000 via LaFace Records, which garnered commercial success. Her more pop rock-oriented second studio album, Missundaztood, which began a marked shift in the sound of her music, was released in 2001, and was successful worldwide. Pink released her third album, Try This, in November 2003, and her fourth in April 2006, I’m Not Dead. The latter generated seven hit singles, including “Stupid Girls”, “U + Ur Hand” and “Who Knew”. Her fifth and final album, Funhouse, was released in late October 2008 and was preceded by her first solo number one on the Hot 100, “So What”.

Pink met professional motocross racer Carey Hart at the 2001 X Games in Philadelphia. Hart had previously been screened in Pinks early music video clip “Just Like a Pill.” In 2005, Pink proposed to Hart during a Mammoth Lakes, California motocross race by holding up a “Will you marry me?” sign on his pit board. On the other side was written “I’m Serious!”. They married in Costa Rica on January 7, 2006.

After months of speculation, Pink’s publicist, Michele Schweitzer, told PEOPLE magazine on February 19, 2008, that the singer and Carey Hart had separated. “This decision was made by best friends with a huge amount of love and respect for one another”, Schweitzer said. The video for her 2008 hit “So What”, in which Hart appears, deals with her separation and pending divorce.

In March 2009, Carey Hart revealed in an interview for SpeedFreaks that he and Pink were ‘dating’. Carey has also confirmed on Jason Ellis’ Sirius XM radio show, The Chelsea Lately Show & The Best Damn Sports show that he and Pink are attempting to work things out stating: “Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps back to move forward”. Pink has stated that the couple has gone to marriage counseling and have gotten back together. They were never legally divorced.

Pink is involved with many charities including “Phoenix vert”, Human Rights Campaign, ONE Campaign, Prince’s Trust, New York Restoration Project, Run For The Cure Foundation, Save the Children, Take Back the Night, UNICEF and World Society for the Protection of Animals. As of May 2008 Pink has been officially recognized as an advocate for the RSPCA in Australia. On February 16, 2009, Pink announced she was donating $250,000 to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal to aid the victims of the bushfires that swept through the Australian state of Victoria earlier that month (a total of 173 people died in the fires, with around 500 injured, and 4000 homes lost). Pink stated that she wanted to make “a tangible expression of support”.

September 16 – Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

September 16th’s “HOT or NOT?” candidate was Julia Louis-Dreyfus. You voted. Juila is:

julia_louis-dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is best known for her roles as Elaine Benes on the NBC sitcom Seinfeld and as Christine Campbell on the CBS sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine.

She has won two Emmy Awards, five Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

Louis-Dreyfus was born in New York City, to Judith, a writer and special-needs tutor, and Gérard Louis-Dreyfus (also known as William Louis-Dreyfus), a French attorney and business executive. Her parents divorced a year later. After relocating to Washington, D.C., when Julia was eight, her mother married L. Thompson Bowles, Dean of the George Washington University Medical School.

Louis-Dreyfus has a half-sister on her Louis-Dreyfus side, Phoebe, a social worker. Through her father, a billionaire heir to the Louis Dreyfus Group, one of the world’s largest commodities trading and merchandising firms, she had a cousin, Robert Louis-Dreyfus (1946-2009), former CEO of Adidas and owner of the Olympique de Marseille soccer team. Robert died in July 2009 after a long battle with leukemia, aged 63.

Louis-Dreyfus spent her childhood in several states and countries in connection with her stepfather’s work with Project HOPE, including Sri Lanka, Colombia and Tunisia. She graduated from the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland in 1979, and attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she studied theater, appeared in the Mee-Ow Show, and was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. After three years she left to begin work on Saturday Night Live, being rewarded by the University in 2007 with an honorary Doctor of Arts degree.

While at Northwestern, Louis-Dreyfus met future husband and Saturday Night Live comedian Brad Hall. She, Hall, and future SNL writer Paul Barosse all were members of the community’s storefront theater troupe, the Practical Theatre Company.

Louis-Dreyfus and Hall have two sons, Henry (born June 1992) and Charles (born May 1997).

Louis-Dreyfus was a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live from 1982 to 1985. While on SNL, she met writer Larry David, who would later co-create Seinfeld. Louis-Dreyfus also appeared in a few sitcoms and films over the years, but is best known for her nine-season role as “Elaine Benes” on NBC’s Seinfeld from 1990 to 1998, appearing in all but three episodes. On the “Notes About Nothing” featurette on the Season 1-2 DVD, Jerry Seinfeld notes that Louis-Dreyfus’ ability to eat a peanut M&M without cracking the peanut aptly describes the actress: “She cracks you up without breaking your nuts”.

After Seinfeld, Louis-Dreyfus began a new NBC sitcom, Watching Ellie, which was canceled after two abbreviated seasons. Louis-Dreyfus came to be seen as a victim of the “Seinfeld Curse”, a term applied to typecast actors who, after appearing in an enormously popular television series or movie, have trouble finding popularity in other roles.

Her mid- to late-2000s series, The New Adventures of Old Christine, receives high ratings. Louis-Dreyfus won the Outstanding Actress Emmy Award for her work on the show’s first season, exactly 10 years after her Seinfeld win. Referring to the curse, she stated in her acceptance speech, “I’m not somebody who really believes in curses, but curse this, baby!”

She had a recurring guest role as the deceitful prosecutor and love interest of Michael Bluth, Maggie Lizer, on Arrested Development. She has also appeared on The Simpsons, providing the voice for Snake’s girlfriend Gloria on three episodes.

She returned to host Saturday Night Live on May 13, 2006, becoming the first female former cast member to return as host. (Gilda Radner was supposed to host in the 1987-88 season, season 13, but the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike cut the season short, and Radner died of ovarian cancer a year later.) Louis-Dreyfus appeared with former Seinfeld mates Jason Alexander and Jerry Seinfeld in the opening monologue, parodying the so-called “Seinfeld Curse”. She mocked the curse once again while accepting her Emmy award in 2006. She has also appeared on Seinfeld co-creator Larry David’s show Curb Your Enthusiasm, playing herself fictionally trying to break the “curse” by planning to star in a show in which she would play an actress affected by a Seinfeld-like curse. She has currently been nominated for all the show’s seasons for Emmys, but has lost to Tina Fey for 30 Rock and America Ferrara for Ugly Betty.

On June 21, 2009, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced Louis-Dreyfus will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the upcoming year.

She will be appearing along with rest of the cast of Seinfeld on the seventh season premiere of Larry David’s sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm in the fall of 2009.

September 9 – Kate Mara

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

September 9th’s “HOT or NOT?” candidate was Kate Mara. You voted. Kate is:

kate_mara

Beginning acting in her hometown of Bedford, New York, Kate Mara moved from the stage to her first film, Random Hearts (1999). Her notable roles include appearances in the Academy Award-winning film Brokeback Mountain, playing the daughter of Heath Ledger’s character, and on the Fox television series 24, as computer analyst Shari Rothenberg. She has since appeared in the feature films We Are Marshall (2006), Shooter (2007), and Transsiberian (2008). Mara joined the cast of the HBO series Entourage for the sixth season, and co-stars in The Open Road (2009), with Justin Timberlake. She will play Bethany Cabe in Iron Man 2 (2010) .

Mara’s family owns the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers; she is the great-granddaughter of Giants founder Tim Mara, the granddaughter of late Giants owner Wellington Mara on her father’s side, as well as the great-granddaughter of Steelers founder Art Rooney on her mother’s side. Mara’s uncle is John Mara, the president and CEO of the Giants, and her father is the vice president of player evaluation. Mara attended almost every Giants home game while growing up. On Sundays, after attending church, her family would head directly to the games. When asked by Vanity Fair magazine whom she roots for when the Giants play the Steelers she replied, “that question is not allowed. I can’t answer”, and has since told the New York Post, “rooting for the offense is the safe way to go. You win either way.” Mara missed the Steelers winning Super Bowl in 2006 because she was working in Los Angeles. Mara was so disappointed, she added to her contract that if the Giants or Steelers go to the Super Bowl, she can attend. She attended almost every game of the 2007 Giants season, leading up to the team’s win in Super Bowl XLII.

Mara’s favorite Giants game was when she was asked to sing the national anthem in honor of her grandfather, Wellington Mara, who died in October 2005. Mara has regularly sung at home games and season openers of the Giants since about the age of 15 or 16 when her uncle asked her to fill in when they couldn’t find a singer. She has also sung at a couple of Steelers games. She sang the national anthem at the 2006 NFL season opener, dubbed the “Manning Bowl,” where the Giants played the Indianapolis Colts.
